    Commercial Foundation, Technical Experience

I began my career as an accountant before moving into legal technology more than twenty years ago. That commercial grounding continues to influence how I approach every engagement.

Systems are not simply technical tools. They influence profitability, risk exposure, operational efficiency and management visibility. A case management platform, if poorly structured, can quietly undermine performance. If designed and governed properly, it becomes a strategic asset.

My focus has always been on ensuring that technology supports the business rather than distracting from it.

    Former IT Director

Before operating independently, I led internal IT functions within legal businesses. I was responsible not only for system performance, but for technology strategy, vendor relationships, budgeting, governance and delivery of major projects.

I understand the pressure that sits with internal IT leadership. Board expectations are high. Budgets are scrutinised. Users are resistant to change. System failures carry operational risk.

That experience allows me to operate confidently at senior management and board level, while still understanding the technical realities beneath strategic decisions. It also means I approach projects with accountability in mind. Advice is easy. Ownership is harder.

    Operator, Not Just Adviser

Alongside consulting, I have built and operated software businesses. Running a software company changes your perspective. You become responsible for product design, development quality, integration capability, support stability and commercial sustainability.

You learn quickly that poorly structured systems create long-term cost. You learn that technical shortcuts compound over time. And you learn that delivery discipline matters more than enthusiasm.

That operational experience informs the way I approach CMS replacement and system transformation work. Technology must be robust, scalable and commercially defensible. Anything less creates risk.

    Case Management & CMS Transformation

A significant proportion of my work involves case management system development across platforms including Proclaim, Clio, Actionstep, Tessaract and Efimis, as well as full CMS replacement projects. These are rarely straightforward exercises.

Replacing a case management system is one of the highest-risk technology decisions a law firm can make. It affects workflows, reporting, staff behaviour, compliance, client experience and ultimately financial performance. Without structure and governance, projects drift. Timelines extend. Confidence erodes.

My role is to introduce clarity. To ensure requirements are properly defined. To challenge assumptions. To bring control to vendor engagement. And to maintain commercial focus throughout the process.

When case management systems underperform, the issue is rarely the platform itself. More often it is architecture, workflow design and reporting structure. Addressing those fundamentals makes a measurable difference.

    Integration & Automation

Modern law firms operate within increasingly complex technology ecosystems. Case management systems sit alongside document management platforms, telephony systems, reporting tools and third-party service providers.

Where systems can integrate directly, they should. Where they cannot, intelligent automation can eliminate repetitive manual intervention.

Integration and automation are not simply efficiency initiatives. They improve accuracy, reduce operational friction and create better management visibility. Used properly, they support control and scalability.

Active in the Legal Technology Market

In addition to advising law firms, I co-founded LegaltechLive, a networking platform bringing together law firms, legal technology providers and industry leaders.

This involvement provides ongoing exposure to emerging platforms, vendor innovation and market trends, strengthening the strategic insight brought to CMS replacement and technology leadership engagements.

    Senior-Led, Scalable Delivery

All projects are led directly by me. Where additional technical capacity is required, I draw on a trusted network of specialist consultants experienced in Proclaim, Clio, Actionstep, Tessaract and Efimis development, data migration and systems integration.

This model ensures that projects remain senior-led and accountable, while still providing the depth required for larger transformation work. It combines strategic oversight with practical delivery.

I work with a small number of law firms at any one time, typically where technology risk is significant or where internal capability requires strengthening.

Whether acting as a fractional CTO, leading a CMS replacement programme or restructuring a case management build, my focus remains consistent: structured delivery, commercial alignment and long-term system stability.

Technology change should reduce risk, not introduce it.

    A Conversation

If your firm is considering replacing its case management system, restructuring its Proclaim environment, integrating disconnected systems or introducing senior-level IT leadership, I am always open to an initial conversation. Serious technology decisions deserve experienced oversight.
